Podcast #102 – Robin Arkell Talks Strength and Conditioning, While We Ask Should There Be A Statute of Limitations on Athletes and How Many Sports Have Changed Tack During Covid.

Thank you to everyone who tuned into the last podcast which had one of the highest number of people listen since we changed over from a live show to a podcast format. Hopefully as many will tune in to this our last show of 2021.

Hockey fans will be well aware of the outstanding performances by the Indian men and women in Tokyo, with the men medalling for the first time in 41 years. How much of that was down to the players strength and conditioning? In this show we catch up with South African Robin Arkell who was one of the strength and conditioning coaches and we hear what he found when he was appointed and what he implemented along with the other coaches to give India the best chance of peaking in Tokyo. At present his future is uncertain, having left Hockey India after Tokyo.

In our topics under discussion Ashley asks if there needs to be a statute of limitations in how far back people can go to find dirt on current and former athletes? The latest revelations about Australian cricket captain Tim Paine raising a number of issues, as well as the accusations from ten years ago levelled against former England captain Michael Vaughan, some of which are discussed. Social media has changed the world, yet as teenagers how many are wise enough to realise the implications of what they post? Should they be made to pay for ill-informed or immature comments later in life when no doubt many will have moved on from that time in their lives?

John meanwhile tries to look at the future of sport and the long term impact that Covid has had. How many sports used this time to re-assess, regroup and reshape their sport? How many have blindly tried to plough the same furrow? Is this why crowds are staying away? Or is it the average fan is sick of the privileges afforded athletes and their partners? One thing is for sure there is too much international sport and this is devaluing the product, no longer is it a special event.

If sport is as we are frequently told ‘a business,’ should it have to offer the same consumer guarantees?
