You win a place on a team at the Olympic Games, fulfilling a lifelong dream, do you let you parents come and watch? Will they be a distraction?
This is not a new question. In fact many coaches have said that they believe that many parents are a distraction that needs to be managed very carefully. There is no doubt that at the Olympic Games there are already so many more distractions with the Games being a multisport event.
Our guest on this show is former New Zealand International Hockey player Shea McAleese who was fortunate to attend four Olympic Games. At his first Games he told his family that he did not want them there as he had to focus on what he was there to do, play hockey. Now having transitioned into coaching he has been documenting many of the lessons he has learned along the way. One of the issues he revisited was whether he did the right thing in Beijing? What did he learn from making that call and how is he, and New Zealand Hockey using that knowledge to make it easier for those coming through now?
In this show Ashley asks should administrators be allowed to travel to international sporting events at the sport’s expense if they are asking those representing their State, Province, County, or Country to pay their own way to the tournament? Is that fair? Is it time such expenses were made public knowledge, so that all who pay fees to play can see where those fees are going?
John asks why the Wallabies continue to take on the All Blacks at Eden Park? Australia has not defeated the All Blacks at Eden Park since 1986 and were comprehensively beaten again. Meanwhile, the rendition of the national Anthem was outstanding, and Ashley mentions the respect shown by the ball kids in Inner Mongolia.
John then looks at The South Africa v Australia Test Cricket Series and asks where are the crowds? Also why has cricket taken on the trend of a countdown clock to start the game? John also asks will TV save Test Cricket?
