You’re Booked: Woolmer On Cricket

You’re booked” is a series of recommended sporting reads by international sports commentator, Ashley Morrison. An avid book reader and sports lover, these reads are curated from his personal collection of over 1500 sports books.

Former England batsman Bob Woolmer prior to his premature death was regarded as one of the leading cricket coaches in the World. This book published in the year 2000 is a great insight into his mind and his relationship with another cricketer who departed too early, former South African captain Hansie Cronje. It looks at the famous 1999 Cricket World Cup and also other aspects of the game, including some of the politics.

“My priority when i coach anyone, or any team, is to try to be enthusiastic. It is advice well learnt from the very first full time international coach, Bobby Simpson, who was so successful with Australia.” Woolmer writes. He highlights how other sports coaching methods benefitted him but states the key issue. “Paying attention to detail is a prerequisite of this game, so long as by doing so you do not discourage flair.”
