Podcast #98 – The “Twisties,” Parent Involvement, and A Look at Tokyo

It has been a while between shows and we apologise for that but Ashley had commentary duties in Tokyo. Hopefully you listened to his updates from the Olympic Games, and we hope that this show was worth the wait.

In this show we talk “Twisties” what they are and how they can affect a gymnast. Gymnastics commentator and former head of Gymnastics at the Western Australian Institute of Sport Liz Chetkovich joins us once again to discuss what happened to Simone Biles, who was the overwhelming favourite heading into the Tokyo Olympics. Was it too much pressure? Was it the weight of expectation from a nation? Liz who saw Biles in training in Tokyo talks us through what happened and explains her withdrawal, and the fact that this was misreported.

In our topics under discussion Ashley heads into controversial territory as he raises the issue of parents involvement in the careers of high performance athletes. This is a very grey area, as there is no guidebook on parenting, or parenting an elite athlete. Many parents make huge sacrifices so that their children can live out their dream, but should they be so involved? Is that involvement detrimental to their careers and their performance?

John during his topic opts to quiz Ashley on what it was like to be in Tokyo and were the Olympic Games the way many saw them in their lounge rooms.
