After the success at the Paris Olympic Games, Australian Athletics has once again recorded its best performance at the rescheduled Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. In this show we catch up with the Vice President of Australian Athletics Brian Miller to hear how the Games were received, and where the focus shifts now for Australian Athletics.
Has Glasgow saved the Commonwealth Games? As successful as the paired back Games were Brian shares his view on the Games future. Interestingly some non-Commonwealth nations took part.
Brian also discussed an obvious economic benefits which makes us refer back to our last guest TJ Rosandich whose comments were backed up between podcasts as the Western Australian State Government hosted the Calcio Italiano tournament, featuring Italian football giants AC Milan, Inter Milan, Juventus, and Palermo. The WA State Premier has claimed that “Tourism WA analysis found the festival generated an estimated global media value of more than $110 million. The other claim just a few days after the last game was played was that it generated $94 million to the economy. Should they be forced to justify these figures? Our interview would tend to indicate they couldn’t.
In this show Ashley asks fans and administrators to learn from the FIFA fiasco and look at their own governance. There are tell-tale signs as to whether your sport is being run properly. It is clear across many sports that voting can, and is manipulated. So do the voting rights need to be looked at? Should votes be given based on participation numbers or the fees paid by member nations? With many Confederations voting en bloc and determining the outcome of elections how can the power of confederations be reduced? As has been shown in football how important is the voice of the fans to effect change?
John and Ashley look at the Commonwealth Games and their relevancy, after the interview, before John asks can clubs offer waivers on contracts regarding injuries. Are players going to have to find their own insurance? Where would this leave clubs, individuals and the sports legally? Should the top leagues have to follow the English Premier League and set aside funds for former players?
