Podcast #95 – Australian Hockey Olympian Don Smart, Why Tokyo Can’t Cancel the Olympics and Why “Sandpaper Gate” Will Never Go Away.

Time for another show, and there is plenty to discuss in the world of sport!

Our special guest on this show is a hockey player from the Golden Era of Australian hockey, a man regarded by many as one of the country’s best players. Don Smart, as you will hear scored on his debut and from that moment on never looked back. He was part of the Kookaburras team that won their first Olympic medal, and also the team that played in its first Olympic final. Hopefully you will enjoy his memories as much as we did. (Correction to anecdote – India’s first goal conceded at the 1932 Olympics was against Japan not the USA).

In our topics under discussion Ashley looks at the problem facing the city of Tokyo and how they cannot cancel the Olympic Games as they are now the “Exclusive property” of the International Olympic Committee. John however comes up with a cunning plan to get around this clause, which may mean that they could appease their people and not host the Games. The question asked is why would any host city want to host future Games under such contractual restraints?

John looks at the re-emergence of “sandpaper gate” in the media in the past week, and we look at why this will ever go away for the Australian Cricket team.
