Podcast #85 – Football Ferns Coach Tom Sermanni joins us, while the broadcasting of sport during these times comes during under the microscope…

The Covid Pandemic has been a tricky time for those who are coaching International teams. In this show we catch up with the Football Ferns head coach Tom Sermanni to hear how he is trying to stay focussed on pulling the New Zealand Women’s team up to a level where they will be competitive co-hosts of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. He discusses how as a coach he refreshingly looks at ways to win games and how he longs to put one over his former team Australia’s Matildas.

In the topics under discussion John shares with us how the overuse of certain words in commentary are driving him mad. (Ashley then uses one of those words!) Which leads us into the integrity of broadcasting sport as a media partner, does that prevent you from giving an honest assessment. Ashley sticks to a similar theme but looks at how production costs have clearly have been cut on the broadcast of many sports. In particular he looks at the return of the FIH Pro League, and the extra line-markings on the pitch used for the comeback game.Does this damage the broadcast product and the viewer experience? This leads John into a rant on the blue turf being used for day-time games.

Experts then come under the microscope, do they give a true insight for those of you at home watching?
