There have been calls from players such as Mark Viduka for the Football federation of Australia to re-instate the football program at the Australian Institute of Sport, in order to improve the development of young talent. Our special guest on this show is former Perth Glory and AIS Coach Ron Smith, the man who was in charge when the Golden Generation passed through Canberra.
Ron reveals the issues that faced the AIS when he was in charge and advises that there were state programs underpinning the AIS program. Now it is gone is the view we have of the AIS a romanticised one? The football landscape has changed dramatically and Ron explains with that will come new challenges should a move be made to try and re-instate the AIS program.
Ron has a wealth of experience as a coach and shares information on his website The Football Centre and he has been appointed one of the FFA’s Starting XI who have been selected to look at how Australia can improve its development of young players.
In our topics under discussion John asks is it Government’s role to bail out the sports that find themselves in financial trouble. Should this beloved at on a case by case basis? Before receiving funding should they have to get their house in order in terms of management numbers and staffing levels?
Following on from our conversation with Ron the question asked is whose responsibility is it to develop the next generation of players? Are the pathways that have emerged in fact been more damaging than successful? Hopefully the Starting XI will address many of these issues.
