NTFS #109 – Basketball Searching For A Home, Optus Stadium, and The Onus on Sports Making the Top Players Availability…

We are back with another show and as usual there is much to talk about.

Our special guest on this show is the new CEO of the Perth Redbacks Basketball club, Ryan Lenegan. The Redbacks are looking for a permanent home. Like many sports they are bursting at the seams in terms of participants and are having to host games over 22 different venues, which is a logistical challenge in itself. One problem they are faced with is the cost of real estate in their catchment area, which means that Local Government wants a multipurpose facility in order to see a return on investment, and also to satisfy more sections of the community. The Redbacks know what their role is in the community and they have accepted that they need to compromise. How many other sports find themselves in the same position? How many are having the foresight to look at the impact a new venue may have on the cost to participants? Ryan shares some of the challenges facing his organisation.

In our topics under discussion Ashley looks Optus Stadium, and the lack of atmosphere at the Wallabies v England rugby union test match. Optus stadium has just been awarded the prestigious ‘Venue of the Year’ at the international Stadium Awards Awards 2022. It may well be a fantastic structure but once the light show is over how good is it as a venue to watch sport played on a rectangular pitch? While the entertainment side of the event may work well for many sports hosted at the venue at the Rugby Union Test match it was a big fail. In a sporting world where the game is now linked so much to the entertainment it is vital that this is top drawer, as even if the game is dull the match day experience will still pull people back. Screw that up and you lose your audience.

John, speculates that the FIH’s ten year deal with NAGRA a Kudelski Group company who have supplied the online platform to the international body may be in trouble. This leads into Channel 7’s decision to sue Cricket Australia for holding back players, and therefore reducing the quality of the competition they have paid to broadcast. This case could have a massive impact on sport globally, and also future television deals. If a player opts to pull out of a tournament and they happen to be a drawcard, where does that leave them as individuals. This could get very messy. It also begs the question should top players in international sport be held back from league competitions and teams?
