Hiding Behind The Shield

A year ago Footballwest introduced the Footballwest shield, which saw the team that finished top of the league ladder, play the winners of the Soccer Pools Cup. A similar set up to the Charity Shield in England. It was a game that we felt had great merit.

But the body that runs the game here in Western Australia continues to complicate things, and after one year of existence have altered the arrangement.

This year will see the Soccer Pools Cup winners Floreat Athena take on the Perth Soccer Club, the winners of the finals series, who were crowned Champions.

In 2008 there was a finals series, which Perth won, yet the shield was contested between Sorrento who topped the league after the home and away season and the Western Knights winners of the Soccer Pools Cup.

Footballwest are claiming that the clubs agreed this but we are advised cannot find documentation to support the change.

Such a shame that in year two they have tarnished the event by causing sections in the game to be upset, when there really was no need.

The game between Perth and Floreat Athena will be played at Clipsal Stadium on March 14th.
