Family First

Giannis Alexiou 28 has shown many that the lure of fame and fortune never comes before your family.

Alexiou a defender was playing top flight football in Greece in the Super League for Levadiakos, but has moved to a fifth division club in Germany KFC Uerdingan 05 to be with his sick son.

His new born son Thanos was diagnosed with a rare lung disease, hyperoxaluria type 1, and was taken to a Children’s hospital in Athens.  Months of therapy there and in Thessalonki failed to cure the child prompting Alexiou to take his son to Germany where they have more advanced technology to treat the illness.

“The only thing that mattered was the child not my career. I did not come to Germany to quit football either, I’m here to be near my child.” He is reported to have said.

Hopefully his son will make a good recovery and Alexiou has a successful career in the future. He is a man to be admired.
