Australia Wipe The Floor in Sweden

Congratulations to Juerg Kihm and the Australian Women’s Floorball team who became World Champions over the weekend winning the B division beating Hungary 4-2 in the final. This was a magnificent effort by all 27 of the travelling party who paid their own way to Sweden to compete.

This is Australian Floorball’s biggest victory in its ten year history and shows the progress being made by the sport and those running it. Well done in achieving so much in so short a time and with so little financial support.

Jesse Laidler was named player of the match in the Grand Final and Mel Cathie was chosen as a forward in the all star B Division team of the Championships.

Australia started their campaign with a 6-2 win over the Netherlands, and then lost in a tight game to Singapore 2-1. They rebounded to win their last group game against Slovakia 6-5 to come second in their group. This meant that they would play the Germans who topped their group in the semi final. A gutsy 2-1 win booked them a place in the final against Hungary.

The first period saw the underdog Australians come out with a determination that set up the victory taking 2- 0 lead.

The win sees Australia now move up to 8th in the World and also books their automatic place in the 2011 World Floorball Championships.

Hopefully by 2011 a major sponsor will come on board to help these girls build on this success.
