You’re Booked: The Grudge

“You’re booked” is a series of recommended sporting reads by international sports commentator, Ashley Morrison. An avid book reader and sports lover, these reads are curated from his personal collection of over 1500 sports books.

The Grudge by Tom English looks at a point in time when everything was on the line in terms of national pride. There is no greater rivalry in International sport than Scotland versus England and this book captures that superbly. This is the story of the last game in the 1990 Five Nations Championship, and everything is on the line. As England head to Murrayfield not only is the Calcutta Cup up for grabs, but the winner will also claim the Grand Slam. In the background is the political state of the nation, and that plays an even bigger part in the build up to the match, as Will Carling’s England are seen as reflecting Margret Thatcher’s policies, unpopular in Scotland.

“On the morning of the game, when Geech made his really moving speech about how Scots all around the world were willing us on, it registered big time. But, I’ve discovered in the years since, it was even bigger than any of us could have imagined at the time. I’d have been a quivering wreck in the dressing room had I fully realised what the day meant to people.” David Sole.
