Squash is going through a revival in Australia and especially in Western Australia. 2009 seeing the opening of the first purpose built squash centre in Perth in twenty years, the Squash Factory in Malaga.
What is even more encouraging is the young players from Western Australia coming through.
In the Men’s under 17s we have Walter Koteka ranked at 3, Luke Bunting at 4 and Jake Davidson at 7. In the Under 19’s we have Sam Brown at 5 and Jack Molloy at 7. In the Under 15’s we have more West Australians in the top ten, with Kane Koteka at 2 and Matthew Bridle at 6, while Samuel Maricic is ranked at 11.
In the women’s the picture is equally rosy, with in the Under 19 category only Mikayla Maricic in the top ten at 7, while in the Under 17’s Luka Stroop is at 8. In the under 15 category Emily Bunting is ranked number 1.
The future is looking good for young squash playing talent in WA and let’s hope that continues. Well done to all concerned.
