Many years ago Liverpool hard man copped a bit of stick when he was transferred from Everton to Aston Villa, and asked for a transfer because he was homesick; it was in fact his wife who missed their family. Then there was Joey Beauchamp’s ill fated move from Oxford United to West Ham. He lasted 58 days saying he couldn’t stand the traffic travelling from Oxford each day. Quite why he couldn’t move to London is a question that has never been answered. Then he made the mistake of signing for Swindon Town, where the fans understandably never welcomed him.
Anyway the latest in a line of players not wanting to move too far from their roots would appear to be Manchester City goalkeeper Richard Wright. Wright left Preston North End to become City’s fourth ‘keeper after declaring that he could not bear being 200 miles from his family in Ipswich. He is obviously a man who deals in small margins as Manchester is 173 miles from Ipswich. Those 27 miles must make such a difference!
