Former Premier Alan Carpenter has suggested that the new Atletics track in Perth be named after former ABC Journalist and sports administrator Wally Foreman. A lovely gesture, but should we be naming venues after journalists and administrators?
Surely it is only right and fitting that we honour those from the sport that the venue will be used for, so that they may well inspire future generations?
By all means name the media centre after Mr. Foreman, but not the track.
Wouldn’t it be more appropriate to name it after John Winter the first Western Australian to win an Olympic track and field gold medal? Or Shirley Strickland our most successful Olympian in track and field with three gold, one silver and three bronze. Then there is one of the greatest middle distance runners of all time, never losing over 1500metres or the mile.
Let us know who you think this stadium should be named after?
