When will sports administrators get it?
It was refreshing to see UK Ironwoman Chrissie Wellington choose not to attend the Sports Personality of the Year awards in England because not only did the final nominees lack any female contenders but also because there were no athletes with a disability on the short list.
At the Sports Journalists of the year awards Wellington picked up the awards for the year’s most outstanding sporting achievement, having won her fourth world record breaking title.
In modern day sport athletes do not want to be judged by gender and neither do athletes with a disability want a separate category, they want to be judged as athletes competing at the highest level s in their chosen disciplines. Hopefully those organizing awards will realize this sooner rather than later.
