There are many people who recall the first World war hostilities stopping at Christmas and the troops of both sides laying down their weapons and playing football, a scene brilliantly depicted in the movie Joyeux Noel.
Brian McClair the ex Scotland and Manchester United striker has made sure that the youngsters of today are well aware of the tale. He is the man behind the Christmas Truce Tournament that will be played near Ypres – the setting for many lost lives in the Great War. The under 12 tournament will see teams from Manchester United, Borussia Dortmund, Racing Genk and RC Lens.
McClair who is United’s academy director has been quoted as saying “it is important to understand that football has a wonderful power to build Bridges.”
