Thank you to Mark who sent us an email after reading the tribute to Basil D’Oliveira. He advised us that the former England Cricketer actually played Football for the non-white South African team. He apparently also wrote to Charlton Athletic who had a number of South Africans playing for them including Eddie Firmani who went on to play internationally for Italy. However he never received a reply.
Had he have managed to dovetail the two sports as many did in that era he would have joined fellow South Africans Sid O’Linn and Stuart Leary who both played for Kent. O’Linn was actually a double international playing seven tests for South Africa and one football international against Australia in 1947.
