Could it be a case of too much of a good thing for Britain?
Last week Commonwealth Games host city Glasgow failed in its bid to host the 2018 Youth Olympics to Argentina’s Buenos Aires. Even the dangerous city of Medellin in Colombia finished ahead of Glasgow; maybe because fast times would almost be assured in the sprints there!
On the back of London 2012 and the excellent hosting of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Britain has targeted the hosting rights for 70 sporting events, and has already won the rights to 24.
The feeling is that major sporting bodies are now looking elsewhere for hosts feeling enough is enough. The good news for the athletes is that elite sport has benefited in a recent spending review by the Government, with close to GBP500 million guaranteed to sports up until the Rio Games in 2016.
