The World of Boxing sees those at the top involved in fights that see millions of dollars changing hands. The boxers deservedly make a large sum of money from the fight, but so too do the promoters and television networks.
At the WBC Convention in China president Mauricio Sulaiman has asked “resourceful and caring promoters” to help boost the independent fund which helps former boxers, who’ve fallen upon hard times, or suffered life threatening injuries.
The Jose Sulaiman Champions Fund, – Named after his father – which is administered by the Nevada Community Foundation, raised one million dollars from an auction of Special edition Hublot watches a couple of years ago. The watches were exact copies of those presented to a dozen of the WBC’s most memorable Champions including: Mike Tyson, George Foreman, Larry Holmes, Sugar Ray Leonard Jeff Fenech, Azumah Nelson and Julio Cesar Chavez.
There are Twenty five of these exquisite watches that are still available for discerning collectors.
They are a special item and are believed to only go up in value, however each watch is priced at USD30,000.
That may be a huge amount for the average punter, but for the promoters and those on the fringes of the big fights who make money from the Champions, it is a drop in the ocean. Hopefully Mr Sulaiman’s plea will not fall on deaf ears and more money will be raised for those boxers who necessarily did not make it to the top of the tree and who are often forgotten. It is so important that all connected to to sport put back and help those less fortunate or who’s lives have been affected by their involvement.
