For years I have shied away from Football introducing replays for the referees, but the sending off of Kaka yesterday and the Italy penalty show that at the highest level where the acting skills are so advanced referees need help. In both of these cases the referee has spotted something, so the whistle has blown, and the game has stopped.
Why not have a system like Rugby where he can consult the fourth official and ask a direct question, “ Tell me why I can’t issue a red card,” or “Tell me why I shouldn’t award a penalty?”
