Olympic track and field tussle
In one of the most exciting finishes in Olympic track and field history, unknown American Billy Mills and Tunisia’s Mohamed Gammoudi both improved their personal best times by more than 45 seconds to upset the Australian world record holder Ron Clarke in the 10,000 metre in Tokyo. After a see-sawing struggle, Mills flashed home past Gammoudi and Clarke to win by three yards. Mills was not permitted to complete a victory lap because there were so many stragglers finishing the race. 20 years later filmmaker Bud Greenspan took him back to Tokyo for a nostalgic lap around the Olympic Stadium.
