Two guests on the show today as we catch up with Matt Hender and Matt Pallot from the University of WA Volleyball Club. Matt Hender returned from playing in Europe and took over the coaching reins at the club and guided them to their first Premiership in 10 years, and Matt Pallot won the league’s MVP. The club has now become the first Volleyball team in Australia to be invited to participate in the 4X League in Japan.
In our topics under discussion Ashley looks at Sports stars setting up charities or Foundations and whether they would be better off pooling their resources rather than competing against each other. Also should consumers ask more questions before donating? How much money actually gets to the people the charity is set up to help?
John raises the conundrum that is mental health. Former Wallabies player Dan Vickerman’s premature death has shown that as many still pay lip service to mental health issues and that in some quarters we cannot even utter the word suicide. This is a very real problem and a complex one.
We are always open to suggestions on topics for discussion and also guests. Feedback is always welcome.

Thanks All White, glad you are enjoying the new format. Yes the two Matt’s were great, there is no beating passion for what you do in life and these guys were passionate. Thanks again.
Great Podcast! Well done on discussing the issue of suicide amongst sports people. It was done tastefully and with understanding. I for one definitely feel clubs should be held more accountable in terms of looking after ex players.
The interview was fantastic. It was so refreshing to hear two young athletes from WA who are so clearly dedicated to their sport and working so hard to be the best that they can be. If we had decent sports media in this town they would be getting coverage every week rather than those overpaid egotistical AFL players.
Finally, very brave to raise the issue on the Charities. That is bound to have ruffled a few feathers. You are absolutely right when you say if these ex stars are serious they should merge their charities. It is also vital that people ask question as to how much is going to the actual charity and not on staff and expenses. In Perth there are a lot of functions which state “Profits will go to this charity or that” I have found most never donate a cent, yet claim the tax benefits for hosting a charitable event. Shame on them. Again your arguments were well constructed and you put them across well.
A first class show.
