On this show we have two special guests.
Claire Ghabrial returned to boxing after a ten year gap, and according to her coach came back better than ever but as she turned 40 was forced to retire. Kaye Scott came to boxing later in life and won the silver medal in the 2022 World Championship in Delhi, but will not be able to compete at the next Championships because she will have turned 40. Is it right to put an age limit on amateur boxing? This is a strange move when the individuals in question can opt to turn professional, take off their headgear, box more rounds and age is not a factor.
Kaye is on the board of the IBA and has set up a petition to try and overturn this decision. If you feel that it is unfair or makes little sense then sign the petition here. or on her Instagram or Facebook pages.
In our topics under discussion Ashley asks why we are seeing sports hold trials to pick representative teams, rather than having those appointed to coach these teams going out and scouting the players that they want in their side? While there is a place for those players who may not have been spotted to have an opportunity, surely this should be a back up for the coach rather than being the norm?
John turns his attention to the language being used in sport. Sport is throwing up a whole new vocabulary, is this because we employ so many ex-athletes moving into media roles. Then he rants about how Anzac day has become “Anzac week” as sports try to commercialise a day of remembrance.
