As much as we are told that Politics and Sport should never mix they clearly do and appear to be becoming more and more messy.
Our special guest on this show is former Swindon Town goalkeeper Jimmy Allan who took a stand for his beliefs back in the 1970’s and was one of the first professionals to do so. It would ultimately cost him his first team place for almost a season. Looking back does he regret making that decision?
Allan’s career came to an abrupt end following a career ending injury against Rochdale, (Link to the game here), and once again things were very different compared to today in terms of support.
In our topics under discussion John looks at players input on whom they have as sponsors and whether this should be the case. Has sponsorship and what these companies represent now became a bigger issue than many realise. How much has their involvement changed the face of sport? Is it time to see no sponsorships on national team shirts? Or has that day long gone?
Should players when representing their nation be allowed to make public statements on behalf of sections of the community as obviously other sections of the nation they are representing are not given the same platform. Following our guest interview Ashley continues along the same theme looking at athletes who were prepared to make a stand for what they believed and stood up publicly and took the consequences. There are many of them but we only discuss a handful, and some less known than others.
