The Perth African Nations Sporting Association is a community group that is doing great work helping not just migrants but Australians of African descent fit into the community through sport. We catch up with Chairperson Achol Madong to hear how the organisation has evolved and what the hardworking volunteer committee are striving to achieve, also how taking control of their own destiny has made such a difference. Achol also makes a valid point regarding those playing sport, in that each player is an individual and they should be given freedom of expression within that team environment. This is an organisation doing things right, as is evident with the well-supported Perth African Nations Cup.
In this show, English-born Ashley looks at the dropping of England bowlers Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad. Was this really a “disgrace” as some former teammates have tried to claim? If a player chooses to continue playing well into their twilight years surely they have to accept that one day the axe will fall. Few players get to have that dream finish to their careers, the perfect send off. Sport is not about sentiment, it is a hard and at times unfair competitive environment. Have the selectors done what is best for English cricket in the long term? This conversation them meanders back to the Australian coaching situation and Justin Langer’s resignation.
John looks at the Winter Olympics and how they have been a public relations disaster with the IOC losing its grip on the drug cheats. The story around Russian Olympic figure skater Kamila Valieva’s negative drug test is going to play out for a while to come. This is a 15 year old girl, who has been giving her these drugs? The IOC’s banning of Russia for a systematic doping program but allowing the Russian Olympic Committee to continue to compete has been shown to have been a terrible misjudgement by the powers that be.
