Sometimes sport can really give you a lift when you are beginning to lose faith in it.
Aston Villa’s Pedal for Petrov campaign is one that is truly great to see. Two of the clubs masseurs have set a target of raising GBP250,000 for Leukaemia and Lymphoma research a move sparked by the diagnosis of club Captain Stilliyan Petrov with acute Leukaemia in March.
Andy Smith and Alex Butler cycled from Celtic Park to Villa Park and arrived on Sunday and replaced their lycra with tuxedos for a celebratory dinner, that Petrov was unable to attend but were no doubt buoyed by the news that he is now in remission.
Petrov’s condition was diagnosed following tests following Aston Villa’s 3-0 defeat to Arsenal and when the player developed a fever. On the 10th of June Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert announced that Petrov would remain captain of Aston Villa for the 2012-13 season, despite being absent.
For the record, at the time of going to print they have only reached 20% of their target which equates to GBP52,485, so spread the word.
