Welcome to our first podcast of 2025, our apologies that there has been a while between shows.
This is a special year for Not The Footy Show as it is our 20th year on air. Hopefully as we near our anniversary we will have a few surprises for you.
There are many that dream of going to an Olympic Games but a very exclusive group fulfil that dream. Imagine then how few people attend both a Summer and a Winter Olympic Games as a competitor. Our guest on this show is a man who achieved that competing in Decathlon and bobsleigh, the very modest Liston Bochette. Liston competed when Daley Thompson was at his peak, and talks of the camaraderie amongst the athletes and a meeting with Fidel Castro.
After 1988 a conversation with Prince Albert of Monaco led to a switch from Decathlon to the bobsleigh and how “Cool Runnings” really put the sport on the map. Following his retirement as a competitor Liston has continued to give back to the Olympic movement and sport in various ways and shares some of the positive things that he has achieved and continues to try and achieve.
Ashley has just returned from a month in India for the Hockey India League and he looks back on the rebirth of the competition and how it went being based in one place for five weeks. He also raises the question as to whether the sport needs to have a shoot-out following a draw in a league competition?
John being a musician opts to rift through the last month. First up he looks at the Australia v India test series for the Border Gavasker Trophy and the lack of respect given to fast bowlers today. He also asks where are players today looking to play Test Cricket getting their experience. While Ashley asks how good is Alex Carey as a wicketkeeper/batsman and is he receiving the credit he deserves?
A quick reminder that next year Not The Footy Show will celebrate 20 years. Let us know who you would like us to try and talk to in our 20th year and if you would like us to keep going for another ten years.
