In our topics under discussion, John turns his attention to the Superbowl and the final play of the match that secured a victory for the Kansas City Chiefs, and asks was it in the spirit of the game and did it in fact lead to an anticlimactic finish? With sport now being touted as entertainment first and a sporting contest second, was this entertainment?
Ashley returns after watching the indoor hockey world Cup in South Africa, his beloved Swindon Town and also having the Premiere of his new documentary “Return To Your Corner, which was held in New York and hosted by the World Boxing Council. Highlights of the event below.
In his topic Ashley looks at the Shape of The Game coming from World Rugby. One thing he found on his travels was the average fan was becoming sick of the delays caused by using technology and interrupting the flow of the game. How important is it that these decisions are made quickly and how important is it to keep those inside the stadium informed. Another aspect that World Rugby is looking at simplifying the laws and removing subjectivity, which is something to be applauded and other sports also need to look at this. Also a seperate approach to the advance the women’s game. This is refreshing as in many cases just because it works with the men’s game it does not mean it is best for the women’s game.
Is sport killing itself? The fact that in so many sports the style of play is identical no matter which team you watch, is turning fans away. So do clubs, coaches and the sports themselves need to take a new approach?
