With this being our 111th podcast since we came off the Perth Airwaves and the fact that this is “Nelson” and an unlucky number in English cricket parlance, it seemed appropriate that this sport should come under the microscope.
“Mankading” has been in the news a great deal of late, following Deepti Sharma’s legitimate running out of England’s Charlie Dean. We look at whether the naming of this type of dismissal is in fact right, and whether it should in fact be called “Browning” or “Barkering.” Why are we seeing this type of dismissal more often at the highest level? Is it the price to pay for T20 cricket? In a game dominated by bat over ball, the late Australian wicket-keeper and respected coach Rod Marsh put forward an interesting proposal, what are your thoughts on that?
Our special guest on this show is a man who has carved a niche for himself as possibly the best known football cartoonist, David Squires. We find out how he ended up as a cartoonist when this was not an intended career path, and find out how long it takes to create each cartoon and how the process works. Both Ashley and David also show great restraint by not talking too much about the team they both support, Swindon Town FC.
In our second topic under discussion John turns his focus to the national competition Hockey One that returned for season two after a gap of 1046 days or the equivalent of 34 months. The communication in relation to shoot-outs has John hot under the collar. The lack of marketing is another issue that comes under the microscope. What was done in that time to improve the competition between season one or two and iron out any issues? John also comes up with a great idea to save money.
