The battle for President of World athletics has now seen one of the contenders call in the heavies.
Former pole Vault World Champion and legend Sergei Bubka who was recently re-elected as President of the Ukraine Olympic Committee has enlisted the support of the Mayor of Kiev, former WBC Heavyweight World Champion boxer Vitali Klitschko as his vice chairman as he prepares to go head to head with Great Britain’s Lord Coe, architect of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The big question is will this support make any difference to the final outcome?
Many claim that the former 1500 gold medallist still have the inside track in the race for the top job as Coe enjoys a closer relationship with current president Lamine Diack, who has the right to nominate a successor.
Many believe that it will end up going to a vote as the feelings month the voting IAAF members is currently split. Which should make for an interesting campaign in the coming months.
Will Bubka jump ahead in poles or will Coe have the kick to bring him home in the final straight? Time will definitely tell.
