Yes former England legend John Barnes is coming to Perth, but not to take over the reins at Perth Glory. Barnes will be talking to guests about his career in football.
John Barnes started his playing career with Watford when they were in their heyday, he became one of the hottest properties in English football and was soon snapped up by Liverpool where he won the old First Division – now The Premiership – twice, the FA Cup twice, and played for England 79 times; The most caps for at the time, a black player at that time.
After leaving Liverpool he had a spell at Newcastle United, before ending his playing career at Charlton Athletic in 1999.
Barnes had a brief controversial stint as head coach of Celtic in 1999–2000, working alongside Kenny Dalglish. He took over as manager of the Jamaica national team in 2008, but resigned six months later to become manager at Tranmere Rovers. This was another post he would not hold for long. He then moved into television punditry where his views have been insightful and articulate.
With the World Cup just around the corner John Barnes will be in Perth for one night only to look back on his career, the highs and the lows, and talk about whether England can ever win another World Cup.
Who knows he may even talk about “That goal.” Barnes scored his first goal for England against Brazil in the Maracana, the same stadium that will host the world cup final next year, thirty years after he scored.
