There is no doubt that in Boxing circles the king of promoters, Don King has definitely lost his lustre in recent times. The man who dominated the boxing world through the 1970’s and 1980’s and as a promoter believed in sharing the limelight with his athletes, has struggled in recent years to attract any of the big name fighters to his stable.
Now in his 80’s the man who famously gave the world “The Rumble in the Jungle” and the “Thrilla in Manila” is looking for one last big event in the same vein.
The word is he is asking Egypt’s new rulers to underwrite a Heavyweight Championship bout held in the shadow of the Pyramids, a bout he wants to promote under the title “King of the Nile.”
Forty years is a long time and although there are still many dubious Presidents of nations around the world one feels with Egypt’s recent turmoil the last thing that the new Government will be doing is underwriting a fight.
Then again Mr King has been know for his powers of persuasion…
