Former three time World title holder and Boxing hall of fame inductee Azumah Nelson will be accompanying the Ghana Commonwealth Games boxing team to Perth for a training camp.
While in Perth a dinner will be held at the Duxton Hotel in Nelson’s honour, at which he will be the guest speaker. Proceeds from the evening will go to the Azumah Nelson Foundation.
The Azumah Nelson Foundation was set up with the aim of providing social services to the poor and needy through the use of sports and education. It is also hoped that it will deliver Ghana its first Olympic medal. Nelson had been a favourite to win gold in the 1980 Olympics but a boycott by Ghana deprived both him and the country of that elusive first medal.
The visit of the Ghana team has meant that the Australian Commonwealth Games team will come across to Perth after a visit by the Russian team fell through, meaning that Perth will have the cream of two nation’s amateur boxers in town at the same time.
The Azumah Nelson Foundation benefit dinner will be held on 03 September and is a Black Tie event, tickets are $175 each, and are available by calling 0418 907 478.
The following day Ghana will take on an invitational WA team and tickets for this event are available from Boxing WA or Ellie on 0412 404 674 or Geoff 0411 144 791.
