Phil taylor recently won his 16th World Darts Championship, and believe it or not some believe he can now start dreaming of an Olympic medal!
Darts is not yet an Olympic sport, but many are pushing for it to become one, although there is no chance of it being in Rio. In fact all the sports nominating for the 2020 Olympic Games have already nominated and a decision will be made on their which two sports may be admitted later this year. They will also decide on the fate of Taekwondo and the Pentathlon which are rumoured be the two sports most likely to face the chop. (We will be talking to representatives from all nominated sports on the show in the coming months).
It seems incredible that darts could ever be even considered as an olympic sport, but the attendances at tournaments in Europe as well as the television viewing figures suggest it would have great appeal.
Sir Clive Woodward who coached England to the Rugby World Cup in 2003 tweeted after Taylor’s victory, “Darts definitely an Olympic sport,” so the game has people in high places showing their support, but one has the founder of the modern Olympics Baron Pierre de Coubertin would make of ‘arra’s at the Olympics!
