While we may have been critical of the low key Perth Glory pre-season and the lack of hype around town, this morning we were suddenly given a spark of excitement.
A press release came through from the club on their game against State Premier League side Stirling Lions – played while we were on air – and it was not the 2-0 victory that ignited our interest, nor the fact that new recruit Shane Smeltz bagged another two goals.
What had us all revved up was the second last sentence in the match report which told us that Perth Glory have signed a former World Champion. “Young guns Blamo Quaqua, goal keeper Lewis Hamilton and Ryan Lowry, the brother of Qantas Socceroo Shane were also all introduced.”
Now we were well aware that Michael Schumacher was no mean footballer, but were unaware that Lewis Hamilton was too. Schumacher still plays for his local team FC Echichens. He has also appeared in several football charity games and organised games between Formula One drivers. Obviously Ian Ferguson must have been hanging around the pits and spotted Lewis’s talent.
Then again it may be Balcatta Keeper Lewis Italiano has decided to trade off the F1 driver’s name to gain more publicity for himself and the club.
