When we launched “Not the Footy Show” one of the key reasons was to recognise women in sport. Many refuse to acknowledge that female athletes in Australia are far more successful on the world stage than their male counterparts, and certainly many media outlets refuse to acknowledge this fact.
It was therefore very pleasing to read that in the UK in 2014 Sky Sports showed more women’s sports than ever before with an increase in air time of 30% on the previous year. In fact some aspect of women’s sport was shown on Sky Sports on 260 days of the year.
Another thing the station should be applauded for is the fact that next Northern Summer in 2015 they will feature live coverage of a women’s cricket test match for the first time ever. They plan to screen every ball of the women’s seven match Ashes series.
This is great news for female athletes and shows that the wheel is turning albeit ever so slowly.
