Following the joint hosting of the 2002 FIFA World cup by Japan and Korea, rumblings from the game’s governing body said that they would never have a World Cup Finals c0-hosted by two nations. It appears that that may well have changed.
FIFA has said that they would like to see the 2030 Centenary World Cup to be jointly staged by Uruguay and Argentina the two teams who contested the inaugural World Cup final in Montevideo.
In 1930 the double Olympic Champions Uruguay beat Argentina 4-2 at the Centenario Stadium in front of 80,000 fans.
Julio Grondona Argentina Football Association President and the senior Vice President of FIFA said “FIFA Wishes to celebrate the World Cup’s 100 years in Argentina and Uruguay.”
One thing is for sure it could boost the economy of both of these countries, however to bring the stadia up to a suitable standard and create the infrastructure to host such an event will cost hundreds of millions of dollars and having seen the reaction Brazil to such expenditure one has to ask how the people of these two countries will react. They may well love football but most would rather have better housing health and education than a major event that lasts six weeks.
