The Swiss Court of Arbitration is heading to the United Kingdom in March to hear the British Olympic Association’s case for banning drug cheats at the games for life.
Most sports fans would think this would be fairly straightforward but current Chair of the BOA Sir Craig Reedie believes that the rule will be overturned. That could mean that currently banned British athletes, sprinter Dwain Chambers and cyclist David Millar could in fact well compete in London.
The reason for his pessimism is that the Swiss Court of Arbitration has already ruled against the International Olympic Committee on this same issue. “In law lifetime bans are very difficult to sustain,” Sir Craig was quoted as saying.
Sir Craig is also a member of the IOC Executive Board as well as being on the World Anti Doping Authority.
He is extremely proud of London’s UKL10 million anti doping facility which is being billed as the best in the World and able to process 400 blood and urine samples a day.
As former Olympian Roger Black has said there will still be drug cheats who simply come off the ‘juice’ weeks before the Games begin, in order to be clean.
