Frequently in these days of high profile high paid sportsmen we pick up on the bad news stories and miss the good news ones.
In the background of this weekend’s European Champions League final between German sides Bayern Munich and Dortmund at Wembley lies a good news story involving one of the competition’s major sponsors Gazprom.
On the morning of the final Franz Beckenbauer himself a Bayern Munich legend will host a breakfast called “Football for Friendship.” This is part of the $550million Gazprom for children project.
Gazprom will fly 700 children to London from eight European countries among them some from a Russian orphanage. All 700 will be taken to Wembley for the game.
This is a great gesture and rather than filling those seats with corporate fat-cats the game will be given to many who would have thought it was out of reach.
Having not been aware of that Paul, I hope so too.
Hugely controversial company is Gazprom. According to the Society for Threatened People the Nord Stream pipeline negatively altered the lives of the nomadic people in Russia’s north. Let’s only hope that some of the kiddies from this deprived region get a chance of a trip to Wembley also.
