There are few of us today who have not been touched by cancer, and it is always great to hear of someone fighting back after being diagnosed with the disease.
Snooker’s Ali Carter had the perfect return to his sport after undergoing treatment for lung cancer, he won the General Cup in Hong Kong last weekend.
The two time world Championship runner up has had to spend six months away from the game and claimed a 7-6 win over former World Champion Shaun Murphy. Carter had to come from behind and completed a break of 101 to level the final at 6 frames all. This was his second century break of the contest.
“It is a great result and I am delighted. After what I have been through it is amazing, and to think where I was a few months ago. It is very emotional, and I will be back in ranking tournament action at the UK Championships next month.” Carter said. ” I played well here, the cancer seems to have taken the pressure off worrying about the game. Life is very strange, I was so low and now to be on this high is unbelievable.”
The lesson for all of us, at every level of sport is that ultimately it is only a game, and if you do not have your health you cannot compete at any level. May he find his levels of enjoyment in snooker reach a new high and his comeback be a lesson to all.
