The Springboks and their staff could have ZAR54 Million reasons to smile as the Sunday Times in South Africa revealed that this would be the prize money pool if they retain the Rugby World Cup. Which amongst 47 staff may not in fact seem that much.
The Times reported that it had been reliably informed ‘that the 17 people backing up the Boks, from coach Peter de Villiers down to the baggage master, would each get R500000 for winning “Bill”, the trophy’s nickname.’
The paper went on to state that ‘This would be made up of R20000 each for wins in the group stages, R100000 for past the quarterfinals, and ZAR150000 for the semis and final. If that’s the amount for the back-ups, the players would get at least three times that: ZAR1.5-million each.’
Many are saying it will be irrelevant as they cannot see the Boks progressing past the quarter finals, but time will tell.
The paper also reported that the Wallabies have been promised R840000 (approx AUD$140,000) each if they can regain the trophy they last won in 1999.
