Who is Afraid of Susie Wolf?

It has been 22 years since a woman driver took part in a Formula One Grand Prix weekend but Susie Wolf is about to change all that. It was announced earlier this week that Wolf will be on the track for Williams in two free practise sessions later this year.

Susie Wolf, the 31 year old Scottish wife of Mercedes motor sports head Toto Wolf, who is a former Williams executive director will remain their development driver in an expanded role that will include two friday outings in 2014. Williams did not reveal which two race weekends Wolf will appear at.

“I am looking forward to the opportunity to ge behind the wheel of the FW36 on a Grand Prix weekend” Wolf said.

Wolf has raced for seven years in German Touring Car (UTM) Championship. She also took part in an official Forumla One test for Williams last year and has also been a part of aerodynamic testing. It is unlikely she will actually race with Felipe Nasr the team’s official reserve and test driver.

The last woman to take part in any stage of a Grand Prix weekend was Italian Giovanna Amati who tried and failed to qualify with Brabham in 1992.
