The Vuvuzela is another item unique to South African football, and irritated international fans media and television viewers during the Confederation Cup.

Originally an animals horn would be blown at games, however now the noise comes from a plastic horn approximately 80cm in length. According to African folklore “A baboon is killed by a lot of noise.” The fans therefore blow on their vuvuzelas throughout the game in an attempt to “kill off” their opponents.

FIFA, had initially wanted to ban the vuvuzela during the World Cup 2010 as they had concerns that hooligans could use the instrument as a weapon. They were also concerned of the commercial aspect, and that businesses could place advertisements on vuvuzelas. The South African Football Association (SAFA) made a presentation to FIFA that vuvuzelas were essential for an authentic South African football experience, and FIFA acquiesced. As a result they are not keen to reverse that decision.
