Czechs star in ice hockey

The Czech Republic, anchored by star goal tender Dominik Hasek, upset the United States 4-1 in a preliminary round match at the Nagano Olympic Games. Mike Modano scored first for the US but a 3-0 second period virtually wrapped up proceedings for the Czechs. Hasek stopped 38 shots. The loss was a blow for the US. The Americans failed to qualify for the medal round, whilst the Czechs went on to beat Canada 2-1 in the semifinal, and Russia 1-0 for the gold medal.
