President kickstarts baseball tradition

United States President William Howard Taft inaugurated the baseball season by throwing out the first ball to Walter Johnson, before the Washington Senators’ home game against Philadelphia. The act began a baseball tradition that Taft’s successors continue. The Senators won the game 3-0.
