Landy runs four-minute mile

John Landy showed inspiring sportsmanship in winning one of the most sensational races in athletics history at the Australian Mile Championships in Melbourne. Landy, the second man in history to run a sub-4 minute mile, stopped to help young fallen runner, Ron Clarke back to his feet. He steamed home to win the race against all odds. Clarke went on to break 19 world records in distances from 2 miles (3.22km) to 20,000m.
