Sonny Day for Lomu?

With the rugby World Cup soon to get under way in New Zraland many are surprised to hear that All Black legend Jonah Lomu is keen to get in the boxing ring and take on current All Black Sonny Bill Williams.

There are many who believe this would in fact be one of the biggest stouches in New Zealand boxing history, two All Blacks going head to head.

Lomu, who was rugby union’s first real global superstar, is said to be more than upset that he was rebuffed by Sonny Bill’s management.  It is claimed they told him they would only ever consider lining up credible opponents for the Kiwi dual international.

They then signed 43-year-old Alipate Liava’a, a boxer who was on sickness benefits, to lace on the gloves.

Lomu, 36,  who is in training for a charity boxing tournament between rugby union and league stars  was quoted as saying ”I was told they wanted to fight someone with boxing credibility, so they said the last bloke he fought was credible when compared to me.

”I think they showed a lack of respect. I’m not a boxer, so I’m not prepared to say what I think of him as a fighter, but my advice to Sonny Bill Williams – if he took the challenge – would be enter the ring at your peril. The one thing for sure is I love being hit … I love it … but the other person has to deal with what I throw back.”

The ”Fight for Life” charity boxing tournament in New Zealand will take place on December 3.
