Selection Process Starts Again

Organisers of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics have taken the step of officially launching the bidding process for sports hoping to be added to the Summer Games in Japan, the International Olympics Committee (IOC) confirmed last week.

The two news sports to be included in next year’s Rio games are Golf and Sevens Rugby.

Among the possible sports which could be added to the Games schedule are baseball and softball, which have been in the Games previously and are both very popular in Japan. Also vying for a berth are squash, karate, skateboarding and surfing.

International sports federations have been invited to answer a questionnaire which must be returned to the Japanese organising committee before June 8. Following this a shortlist will be revealed on June 22.

Finalists will then be invited to make a presentation in Japan. The organisers will then make their recommendations to the IOC by September 30.

The  final decision which rests with the IOC will be made in August 2016 at their meeting in Rio de Janeiro.
